The GPS receiver Garmin uses in the Forerunner 305 is a high-sensitivity tracker, and I have spent a heck of a lot more for portable and car systems that were horrible in comparison. Part of one of my regular runs is through a dense tree-packed park, and I have never once “dropped off” and lost my satellite, or should I more appropriately say, the satellite hasn’t lost me. I love that it is a single piece watch, and that even when I am just walking downtown on lunch, I can pick up my pace as I monitor my heart rate. Burning a couple of extra calories at lunch is nice!
The Forerunner 305 GPS watch not only shows recent on-board data, but also allows for downloading of data to any computer, so that you may track and interpret your workout results anywhere. Knowing what time you ran today, and your average hate rate is great, but it is even better with the Forerunner 305 when you can compile data to report in spreadsheet or graph form over time, to see how your workout is going long term.
And the Forerunner 305 is made as an outdoor, rugged, “going to get wet and sweaty” piece of workout equipment. I have never babied it, because I need a watch that can workout as hard as I do, and the Forerunner 305 has never failed me. This is a windsurfing companion, beach watch, jogger trainer, GPS device, hiking GPS, cycling tracker and cross country trainer, all for less than the cost of a good pair of shoes. I am on my third pair of running shoes since I bought my Forerunner 305, and I can tell you, it has held up much better, at a much lower cost.
And all you do is strap it on and go, there are no fancy downloads to contend with, and I love the three different training modes. I had a stay in a hospital about a year ago, and was able to slow down and train at a much slower pace, but still had the same reports and faithful, dependable Forerunner 305 GPS to help me in my recovery. And if you and your friends have access to the same route at different times, the Map-and-Share feature lets you send your route, speed and other data to any friend for some friendly competition.
