While the improved satellite reachability and interplay with the Forerunner 305 and Forerunner 405 (42% off, save $157 through this link) is talked up, the Forerunner 301 works just fine. They all experience issues in ares where the sky is consistently obliterated, and the Forerunner 305 and Forerunner 405 are 2 to 3 times as costly. This is explained as S.O.P. in the Forerunner 301 manual, as well as the more costly models. (The Forerunner 301 is the upgrade from the Forerunner 201 / Forerunner 205.)
In some areas where the sky is blanked out (skyscrapers, bad weather, etc.) you may notice some minor issues with the Garmin 301, as I mentioned above. However, as soon as you link back up you are right where you need to be, and the unit loses no info. The lithium battery also has a very long life.
